Pitfalls
Three that bite here more than in the quick converter. First: name collisions. "Ton" means short ton (US), long ton (UK imperial) or metric ton (tonne) depending on context; this page exposes all three, so check which you selected before trusting the number. "Ounce" is avoirdupois (28.35 g) for groceries, troy (31.10 g) for precious metals, and fluid (29.57 mL) for volume - do not mix them. "Gallon" is US (3.785 L) or Imperial (4.546 L) and the same name means both. Second: affine temperature. A 1-degree interval in Celsius equals a 1.8-degree interval in Fahrenheit, but the reading offsets by 32. If you need interval math (specific heat, thermal conductivity), use a slope-only conversion, not this converter\'s affine reading conversion. Third: small display drift. Round trips through IEEE 754 can show 0.9999999999 instead of 1; the arithmetic is exact at the definition level, the decimal display is not.
Historical Notes - How Did We End Up With Two of Everything?
The United States gained independence before the UK standardized its Imperial system (1824), so US customary units froze around the older English Queen Anne gallons and Winchester bushels. Why are there two different gallons?
The US gallon (3.785411784 L exactly) descends from the English wine gallon of 1707, which the US kept after independence. The UK redefined its gallon in 1824 (Imperial gallon, 4.54609 L exactly, the volume of 10 lb of water at 62 F). The 1959 yard-and-pound agreement aligned US and UK length and weight units but left the gallons separate. American cookbooks use US gallon; British motor-oil bottles and UK cookbooks use Imperial. Check country of origin before trusting a gallon figure.

What is an astronomical unit?
The astronomical unit (au) is a standard of length used in astronomy, defined since the IAU 2012 resolution as exactly 149,597,870,700 meters - roughly the mean Earth-Sun distance. At the speed of light that distance takes about 8 minutes 19 seconds to traverse. For comparison, Neptune orbits at about 30 au and Voyager 1 is currently past 160 au. The unit makes planetary orbit arithmetic far more manageable than quoting distances in kilometers.
What is the difference between an avoirdupois ounce and a troy ounce?
Avoirdupois ounce = 28.349523125 g, used for groceries, body weight, mail and almost everything else. Troy ounce = 31.1034768 g, used for gold, silver, platinum, gunpowder and apothecary measures. The two differ by about 9.7%, so mixing them up when buying precious metals matters. This converter exposes both in the Weight tab; double-check which one the source document used.
How do I convert a square kilometer to acres?
Multiply by 247.105 to get acres. One square kilometer is 1,000,000 square meters; one acre is 4,046.8564224 square meters exactly, so 1e6 / 4046.8564224 = 247.1053815 acres. Large US ranches commonly exceed 1000 acres (4.05 square km); a Central Park is 3.41 square km = 842 acres. The Area tab handles the conversion directly.
Why do affine temperature conversions matter?
Affine means the conversion has both a slope and an offset. For temperature readings: Fahrenheit = Celsius * 1.8 + 32. For temperature intervals (the kind that appear in specific heat or thermal conductivity), you use slope only: 10 C of temperature rise = 18 F of temperature rise, no "+ 32" involved. The tool applies the reading formula automatically; if your context is an interval (delta T), subtract two readings in a single scale rather than converting a delta.
How precise is the output?
The internal arithmetic uses IEEE 754 double precision, which gives 15-17 significant decimal digits. The display caps at 10 significant digits for readability. Every conversion factor in the source code is pinned to an SI definition or a treaty value (NIST SP 811, SI Brochure 9th edition, the 1959 international yard and pound agreement). For metrology-grade precision beyond 10 digits, consult a national-laboratory calibration service.
What is a parsec?
A parsec (pc) equals about 3.0857 x 10^16 m, or 3.2616 light-years, or 206,265 astronomical units. It is defined as the distance at which one astronomical unit subtends an angle of one arcsecond. Astronomical distances beyond the solar system are quoted in parsecs or kiloparsecs; galactic-scale distances use megaparsecs. The light-year is more common in popular science; parsecs dominate professional astronomy.
