Using the Salary Calculator
Convert between annual salary, monthly pay, weekly pay, daily pay, and hourly rate in one pass. Pick the figure you know, and the tool computes the other four using your work-schedule settings.
- Pay type - annual, monthly, weekly, daily, or hourly.
- Amount - gross (pre-tax). For $75,000/year, type 75000 under annual.
- Work schedule - default 40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year (2,080 annual hours), the US full-time standard. Adjust for part-time, overtime, or European 35-37.5 hour weeks.
- Results - every other pay rate calculates instantly. Daily rate assumes hours/week ÷ 5 working days at default.
What This Tool Actually Does
Salary conversion is multiplication and division, but the schedule assumptions matter. From annual: divide by 12 for monthly, 52 for weekly, annual hours (hours/week × weeks/year) for hourly. From hourly: multiply by hours/week for weekly, 52 for annual. A $75,000 annual at 40/52 equals $6,250/month, $1,442.31/week, $288.46/day, $36.06/hour. The weekly and daily rates can be misleading if your schedule does not split evenly - salaried employees get paid weekly regardless of hours worked; hourly contractors bill actual hours.
Paycheck vs. Salary Calculator
This is a gross-pay conversion tool, not a take-home tool. It does not subtract federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, or state tax. For net pay estimates, use a paycheck calculator that handles withholding. A paycheck calculator tells you what hits your bank account; a salary calculator tells you what the offer is worth compared to other offers at different cadences.
When the Tool Earns Its Keep
- Comparing a $75,000 W-2 offer against a $40/hour 1099 contract (~$83,200/year at 40/52 but you pay SE tax).
- Translating a European offer (EUR 4,500/month) to an annual figure.
- Freelancers setting an hourly rate: $100,000 at 48 billable weeks and 30 billable hours = $69.44/hour.
- Part-time analysis - $45/hour at 20 hours for 50 weeks = $45,000.
- Year-over-year raise analysis and negotiation anchoring.
Edge Cases and Schedule Gotchas
The biggest trap is the 52-week assumption. Most employers pay on 26 bi-weekly periods or 24 semi-monthly, not pure weekly. A bi-weekly paycheck at $78,000 annual is $3,000 per paycheck (26 periods). Semi-monthly (15th and last day) is 24 paychecks at $3,250. Second trap: if you take 2 weeks unpaid vacation, set weeks to 50. Third: overtime at 1.5x above 40 is its own calculation not modelled here. Fourth: contractors billing partial hours often round to the nearest 15 minutes, which distorts the effective rate. The daily rate output assumes 8-hour days from 40/52; for a 6-hour workday at 30 hours/week, the daily divisor adjusts automatically.
Pay Period Standards
US payroll is dominated by bi-weekly (~36% of private-sector employers per BLS), weekly (~32%, more common in construction and services), semi-monthly (~19%), and monthly (~11%). Monthly is the norm in Europe, UK, Japan, Australia. "Annual salary" in European offers usually means 13 or 14 months - a 13th-month bonus in December is standard in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain. Southern European countries often pay 14 (extra in July and December). This calculator assumes 12 months; add 13th/14th manually if converting.
Comparison to Alternatives
Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Levels.fyi, and Payscale have benchmarking tools that add market context - what peers earn in similar roles. For pure conversion, a spreadsheet with four formulas does the same math without schedule flexibility. HR software (ADP, Gusto, Rippling) handles conversion internally with full cadence accuracy (26 bi-weekly, 24 semi-monthly). This tool is fastest for plain gross-pay conversion, and adjustable hours/weeks handle non-standard schedules that most calculators hard-code to 40/52.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why 2,080 hours per year?
40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 annual hours, the US full-time standard used by BLS, OPM (federal pay), and most HR systems. The real number for someone taking 2 weeks vacation is closer to 2,000 (40 × 50); federal employees technically work 2,087 hours due to a 1-hour leap-year adjustment (5 USC 5504). Change to 40 × 50 = 2,000 for a vacation-adjusted rate.
How do I convert a 1099 rate to a W-2 equivalent?
A 1099 contractor needs 25-35% higher gross to match a W-2 net, because 1099 pays both halves of FICA (15.3% SE tax on first $168,600), no employer-paid health insurance, no 401(k) match, no PTO, no unemployment insurance. A $100,000 W-2 job is comparable to $130,000-$140,000 1099 gross. Convert 1099 annual to hourly here, then subtract SE tax and benefit-replacement to compare fairly.
What does the daily rate output assume?
Daily = weekly pay ÷ (hours/week ÷ 8), which at 40/52 gives 5 working days per week and 8-hour days. Change hours/week to 30 and the divisor still uses 8-hour days, so weekly pay splits into 3.75 days - a realistic part-time approximation. If your actual workday is 6 or 10 hours, the daily output is still useful as dollars-per-working-day but not dollars-per-attendance-day.
Does the calculator handle overtime?
No. OT (1.5x above 40 hours/week for non-exempt US employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act) is a separate calculation. To estimate OT-inclusive annual: hourly × 40 × 52 plus hourly × 1.5 × OT hours × 52. Exempt salaried employees typically do not get OT. California has stricter rules (daily OT above 8 hours, double time above 12).
Why does a bi-weekly paycheck not equal two weekly?
A year has 26 bi-weekly pay periods and 52 weekly periods. Bi-weekly pay = annual ÷ 26, identical to weekly × 2, but many people expect 24 periods and are surprised by two "bonus" bi-weekly paychecks per year. Semi-monthly is 24 periods on fixed dates (15th and last day) - different cadence, same annual.
Should I enter gross or net salary?
Gross (pre-tax). The calculator does no tax math - it is pure unit conversion. Enter the number from your offer letter or contract, which is always gross. For net take-home after federal, state, and local taxes, use a paycheck calculator. Mixing gross and net produces nonsense results.
Are my salary inputs stored or transmitted?
No. Amount and schedule settings live in Preact component state and disappear when you close or refresh the tab. No network request, no storage, no cookie, no analytics event tied to your salary number. Multiply/divide runs in the browser in nanoseconds.
How do European 13th-month salaries fit in?
Many European countries pay 13 (Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain) or 14 months (Italy, Greece, Portugal, Austria) with extras in December and sometimes July. A EUR 4,000/month offer in Germany often means EUR 52,000 annual (13 × 4,000). Check the contract: Jahresgehalt vs. Monatsgehalt. Multiply the annual by 13/12 or 14/12 if converting from a 13th/14th-month system.
How do I calculate a part-time role?
Change hours/week to your actual working hours. 20 hours/week at $30/hour for 52 weeks = $31,200 annual. If you take unpaid leave, reduce weeks/year accordingly. For a 30-hour school-year schedule (36 weeks), use hours=30 and weeks=36. Daily rate adjusts automatically based on implied workdays.
What is the difference between annual, annualised, and pro-rata?
Annual is the full-year figure. Annualised is the equivalent of partial-year work - a 3-month contract at $20,000 is $80,000 annualised. Pro-rata is the opposite - scaling annual down for partial participation. A $100,000 salary for 6 months is $50,000 pro-rata. For offer comparison, always convert both offers to full-year equivalents before comparing.
