Using the Shoe Size Converter
- Pick gender - Men, Women or Unisex. Sizes diverge by about 1.5 US numbers between men and women, so this choice matters.
- Pick your known system - US, UK, EU or JP (Mondopoint, in centimeters).
- Select your size from the dropdown. The picker shows half sizes where the system allows them.
- Read every system at once. The component keeps a single internal "foot length in mm" value and maps it back out to all four systems simultaneously.
- Scroll the chart below the selector for a full reference range.
What the Tool Is Doing
Every size system maps in a messy way to foot length, which is the true physical variable. The EU (Paris point) system uses length_mm = size * (2/3) * 10, counting in 6.67 mm steps. The UK and US systems use the Barleycorn, a 1/3 inch step inherited from medieval English cobbling, so adjacent whole sizes differ by 8.467 mm. JP / Mondopoint is the only honest one - the size number literally equals foot length in centimeters, as specified in ISO 9407:2019. The converter normalizes whatever you enter to foot length in millimeters, then reports the nearest equivalent in each other system. Because US men, US women and UK sizes run on different offset zero-points, half-size increments do not align cleanly - a US men\'s 10 is a UK 9 but not a UK 9.5. The Preact component precomputes a table so lookup is constant-time.
When You Will Use This
- Shopping on an international site (ASOS, Zalando, Uniqlo Japan) that shows only its own system.
- Buying used sneakers on Depop or Grailed where the listing uses a different country\'s size.
- Ordering ski boots or cycling shoes, which often ship in EU sizing regardless of country.
- Translating a running-shoe review quoting foot length in millimeters into your country\'s size.
- Gifting shoes to a traveler whose local size system differs from yours.
- Comparing two brands that run different widths but quote the same country\'s number.
Pitfalls - Sizing Is Not a Clean Conversion
Two physical variables matter: foot length (heel to longest toe) and foot width (ball circumference). Size-system charts capture length only, and most conversions silently assume a single width. Brands vary by 10-15 mm in actual last length between nominally identical sizes; Nike in Vietnam and adidas in Indonesia use slightly different lasts. Half-size rounding is another issue: US half-sizes map to UK sizes that are not quite half between UK whole sizes, so a "US 8.5" in men\'s can map to UK 7.5 in one chart and UK 8 in another. European "French" versus "Paris" point differs by about 2 mm per size step. JP Mondopoint sizing is usually given in 5 mm increments (26.0, 26.5, 27.0 cm) but some athletic brands use 10 mm steps. This tool uses widely recognized industry charts; always consult the brand\'s own fit guide for precision.
A Short History of Shoe Sizing
English cobbling in the 1300s measured shoes in barleycorns - three grains of barley end-to-end, roughly 8.47 mm. Whole UK child sizes started at 4 inches (about a 4-year-old\'s foot) and added one barleycorn per size. UK adult sizes continue that scale from UK size 13 (the biggest child size) upward. The US system split off in the 19th century with a half-size offset for women and different zero-points for men. France developed the Paris point (2/3 cm) which Europe adopted as its standard by the 20th century. Mondopoint, codified in ISO 9407 in 1991 (revised 2019), measures foot length in millimeters directly and is used by military procurement, ski boots and some athletic brands because it is the only length-accurate system. Nothing in footwear is truly standardized; ISO 9407 exists but brand lasts dominate real fit.
Alternatives
Foot tracing at home - stand on paper, trace, measure heel to longest toe in millimeters - and matching against a brand\'s own printed size chart beats any generic converter. Brannock devices (the metal foot-measuring tool in shoe stores) measure length and width simultaneously and have remained the retail gold standard since 1927. Online foot-scan apps (Shoefitr, Volumental) use phone-camera photogrammetry to produce a 3D foot model that maps directly to a brand\'s last library. This converter is fine for a starting guess but should not substitute for measuring your foot and reading the brand-specific fit notes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a JP shoe size defined?
Japanese sizing, also called Mondopoint, is simply the foot length in centimeters. A JP 27 shoe fits a foot that is 27 cm long. ISO 9407:2019 formalizes this as the only internationally standardized system, and you will see it on ski boots, safety shoes, military procurement and a lot of Japanese athletic brands (Asics, Mizuno). Half sizes - 27.5 cm, for instance - are common in athletic shoes and rare in dress shoes.
Why do men's and women's sizes differ?
Men's and women's shoe sizes in the US use different zero-points. Broadly, a US women's size is about 1.5 US men's sizes larger in number - a men's 8 is roughly a women's 9.5. The offset is cultural rather than anatomical and varies slightly by country. UK sizing has a smaller 1-size offset, while EU sizing uses the same Paris-point scale for both and disambiguates by last width. A unisex EU 42 fits the same foot whether that foot belongs to a man or a woman.
Is my size selection sent to a server?
No. The component ships with the lookup table bundled, so the conversion is an in-memory table lookup inside your browser. There is no fetch call for the conversion, no recommendation API and no telemetry on the numbers you pick. PostHog records the pageview but not your size. You can work through a full sizing decision offline after the page loads.
Why is a UK shoe size one smaller than a US men's?
Historical drift. UK whole sizes start counting from a 4-inch-long child's foot and add 1/3 inch per size. The US men's system uses the same barleycorn step but a different starting offset, set roughly one size higher. So a UK 9 equals a US men's 10 for most of the adult range. UK women's sizes also differ from UK men's by about 1 size. This tool handles the offsets in the lookup table; you do not need to memorize them.
What is a Barleycorn?
One third of an English inch, or about 8.467 mm. It is the step between adjacent UK and US shoe sizes. King Edward II of England fixed the inch as three dry, round grains of barley laid end-to-end in 1324, and cobblers adopted the fraction as a sizing unit. Half sizes split that step in half, giving a 4.233 mm increment - small enough that most people have 20-30 mm of tolerance for comfortable fit.
How accurate is the half-size conversion?
Within about 2-3 mm for length, which is less than typical brand-to-brand variation. Half sizes do not map cleanly across systems because the US and UK increments were not designed to interconvert. A US men's 9.5 falls between UK 8.5 and UK 9 depending on whose chart you use. This converter picks widely used industry values; when you are on the edge of a fit, prefer the brand's own size guide and consider the half above and below.
Why does EU sizing seem tighter than US sizing?
The Paris-point system steps in 6.67 mm increments while US/UK Barleycorn steps in 8.47 mm. So a US full size difference feels larger than a single EU size. That is why a single US size often maps to either a "full" or "full-plus-half" EU size, depending on where you are in the range. Adjacent EU sizes are closer together, which makes EU half-sizes rarer (they exist but are less common in retail).
How do I measure my foot accurately?
Stand on a blank sheet of A4 or letter paper, place a book against a wall and your heel against the book, then trace the outline with a pencil held perpendicular. Measure from the heel edge to the tip of the longest toe. Do it in the evening when feet are slightly swollen, with the socks you will wear. Compare the length in millimeters to the JP (Mondopoint) column in this tool; the others follow. For width, measure the ball of the foot circumference with a flexible tape.
Why are running shoes often a half-size larger?
Feet swell during exercise - repeated impact pushes blood into soft tissue, and a 5-10 mm length gain over a long run is normal. Specialty running retailers recommend half a size up from your street-shoe size for distances above 10 km. That is practical fit advice, not a size-system conversion; this tool gives a length-matched baseline and leaves the sport-specific offset to you.
What is the authoritative standard for shoe sizing?
ISO 9407:2019 ("Footwear - Sizing - Mondopoint system and conversion of sizing systems") is the formal standard and is the basis of this tool's internal mapping. National standards exist - UK BS 5943, US ASTM F539 - but retail practice often diverges from the standard because brands optimize for their own lasts. Mondopoint numbers, when quoted, are the least ambiguous.
